Replacing the hardware later isn’t easy either. Owners often struggle to find compatible parts, since the fittings must match the specific profile. Within just a few months, what looked like a sleek installation can become a source of ongoing problems.

Here's what every architect needs to know about specifying door hardware for aluminium systems.

Why Door Hardware Matters More with Aluminium

A standard aluminium door can be supported by common hardware, but today’s architectural trends are pushing the limits.

Thicker laminated or even double-glazed glass is now widely used for better safety, sound insulation, and thermal performance. This means heavier panels that require more robust and carefully matched hardware.

What’s more, architects designing landed houses or private apartments often opt for extended door widths and heights that significantly differ from standard door sizes. All these call for specialised hardware that is tailored to a specific door type and application.

We’ve watched architects specify beautiful aluminium door systems, only to see the hardware fail within the first year. Sometimes it’s because the contractor omitted small but critical components, or selected only the most basic hardware to stay within a tight budget.

The result? Doors that are difficult to open and close, frames that distort, and building owners who blame the entire system rather than just the poorly chosen components.

Start with the Basics: Weight and Size

Before you even think about aesthetics, you need to understand what your door hardware will be supporting. Modern aluminium door panels can weigh 100kg or more once you factor in the glass. That's not a guess, it's a calculation you need to do early in the design process.

Key pieces of door hardware will have specific load ratings that must be accounted for. When door panels are larger or heavier than standard, off-the-shelf rollers often aren’t up to the task. Some subcontractors do raise this issue and suggest reducing the panel size. A residential-grade roller might handle 50 kg comfortably but fail under 150 kg. A standard hinge designed for regular-sized aluminium doors will sag under the load of a heavy-duty aluminium panel. You need commercial-grade door hardware with proper load certifications. Simply adding more hinges won’t solve the problem either.

Request the test certification report from your supplier, or ask for reputable door hardware brands. If they can't provide it, find someone who can.

Architects may specify the door profile system, but leave the hardware selection to the contractor and focus on more aesthetic elements, such as door handle design. That’s because most architectural drawings may just mention the system type, such as “Euro Profile Sliding System”, for example, without detailing the hardware specifications. The assumption is that the subcontractor will include the original hardware components designed for that system.

In practice, however, this isn’t always the case. Subcontractors will make sure the hardware fits, but that doesn’t guarantee they’re using the original components or the full set of accessories made for that system. Key parts may be replaced with alternatives that do the job, but this leads to durability or performance issues down the road.

It’s important to remember that not all door systems are the same, and neither is the hardware. This means the hardware needs to be carefully matched to the specific configuration.

If the architect hasn’t explicitly specified certified hardware, contractors may choose the most affordable alternative to meet budget targets. This will usually come in the form of generic, untested parts that are incompatible or underperforming. That’s how you end up with a door profile system fitted with mismatched, low-cost hardware that compromises function, safety, and lifespan.

Commercial swing doors take a beating. They're slammed shut, propped open, and used hundreds of times daily. Your door hardware needs to handle all of this without problems down the road.

Standard hinges won't cut it. You need heavy-duty hinges with high-cycle certifications (i.e., components that have been tested for 100,000 operations or more).

Additionally, the lockset needs to be specified correctly to ensure the correct backset position and locking requirements. Depending on the door's height, you may need a single-point or multi-point locking system for effective security. Door handles must also be solid and strong enough to withstand the required door load.

Sliding Systems: All About the Rollers

With sliding doors, the rollers are everything. Rollers that don’t cater to the door weight will create friction, making doors hard to operate and putting stress on the entire system. Users shouldn't need to wrestle with a sliding door; it should glide effortlessly.

As far as rollers go, nylon wheels are smooth and quiet, but they may not handle the heaviest panels as well. Steel or stainless steel rollers are more durable but may be more costly.

The track system matters just as much. Aluminium tracks can wear over time if the door load is too heavy for the rollers, for instance. Stainless steel tracks last longer but cost more upfront. It's a balance between initial investment and long-term performance.

Fold-Slide Systems: Precision Fabrication Required

Fold-slide doors are far more complex. Multiple panels need to move in coordination, stack neatly, and lock securely. Each piece of door hardware, every hinge and roller, must handle its share of the load while maintaining perfect alignment.

This isn't the place to mix and match components. Fold-slide door hardware needs to be engineered as a complete system. That means working with suppliers who understand the physics involved and can provide integrated solutions.

Test the door hardware if possible. A good supplier will have working samples you can experience firsthand. If the door hardware feels cheap or flimsy in the showroom, it won't improve on-site.
